Natural Place Marismas del Río Piedras and Flecha of El Rompido

The marshes of the Río Piedras and Flecha de El Rompido, were declared a Natural Site by Law 2/1989, of July 18, approving the inventory of Protected Natural Spaces of Andalusia and establishing additional measures for their protection ( BOJA No. 60, of 07/27/1989). It occupies an area of ​​2,530 hectares between the municipality of Cartaya and Lepe. Likewise, these marshes are declared as a Site of Community Interest (Es 615006), Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA 2002) and included in the Andalusian Wetland Inventory, which, together with other wetlands of the area such as the "Laguna de Las Borreras", "Las Turberas del Lancón" and "Laguna del Águila", allow the existence of characteristic flora and fauna species in the provincial scope. The Natural Site of the Marismas del Río Piedras and Flecha del Rompido is an enclave of high ecological and environmental quality with a rich biodiversity.

The Piedras River, declared at its mouth as a Site of Community Interest "Estuary of the Piedras River" (ES615028). The importance of this place, is conferred by being one of the few estuaries present in Andalusia. Declared as such by the presence of habitats that are included in Directive 92/43 / EEC, such as pine dunes, embryonic mobile dunes, muddy sandy plains, Mediterranean halophytic scrub, espartina pastures, mobile coastal dunes, etc.

In this natural space there is a unique Sandy Bar known as "La Flecha", in case it forms. This sandy bar is unique in the Andalusian coast, which opens to the Atlantic Ocean from a virgin beach, and which is formed as a result of the contribution of sediments of the Piedras River, of the tidal flow, of the coastal drift and of the prevailing winds of the southwest.
